Succcess with Ebay
By Peter Yexley

Although I have been involved in website marketing since 1996, I seemed to have ignored Ebay as a revenue source, until 2003.

I've managed to generate a reasonable income from Ebay but it wasn't without it highs and lows. You may already have a product that is perfectly acceptable to sell on Ebay … and most things are. I didn't have a product but in order to get a feel for it, I started emptying out drawers and cupboards.

The thing that struck me the most was that everything that I placed, sold and often for very, very good money. The most amazing thing was that when I cleared out my bookshelf, some books sold for more than the new price!

The time came when I felt very comfortable about Ebay and chose to sell a product. I'm not going to reveal the product yet, not for protective reasons but I really want you to focus on yours not mine.

Success on Ebay is common and setting up is easy, in fact Ebay has so much online help and support that I don't need to echo them.

What I think is worth writing about are the top ten 'Do's and Don'ts in successfully trading on Ebay.

One: Sell Good Products … properly.
Ebay could easily be the world's biggest online junk shop if all people sold was their rubbish. If you intend to earn serious money and became a success on Ebay then be professional. Place quality, clear, bright photographs that clearly illustrate your product.

Think about time and energy in carefully packaging. Your risks of breakage, lost items, negative feedback and non-payers are greater with the more products you sell. Equally you pay a fee for each product. Fortune is in your favour by selling one product for ten times the cost of one smaller or inferior product. Ask yourself this; would you rather sell one item for £100 or one hundred items for £1?

Two: Don't Sell Rubbish
It might be clever writing fantastic advertisements and stealing photographs off the internet of a new version of your item for sale, but when it arrives at your buyers, your going to get the feedback you rightly deserve!

Three: Develop Quality Listings
There is no question about quality listings bringing in more money. Invest time in writing good copy; describe the item in absolute detail and ensure your layout is pleasing to the eye.,

Four: Strive for top quality feedback
The Ebay feedback system is a stroke of genius, firstly it tells of previous buyers' experiences and in order to gain good positive feedback, you have to provide good quality service. It isn't unusual for someone new to Ebay to leave negative feedback
Five: Provide Exceptional Customer Service
Apart from the feedback reason, customer service is the all-important bit that brings in repeat business. Whether you are buying items to sell specifically for Ebay or using Ebay as another marketing arm for your business, don't fail your customers.

Six: Dedicate time and Commitment
Treat your Ebay enterprise as a professional business, dedicate time and commit yourself to studying the marketplace. Compare 'Buy It Now' deals with proper bids and monitor results.
Answer potential buyers questions promptly. Be polite, and most of all be honest. Don't judge and individual's intelligence by the manner in which he or she writes. The World Wide Web is a small place and your next buyer could easily be from another part of the world.
Seven: Do Unto Others as You Would Be Done By ..
Ethics are important to me and I believe that what goes around, comes around. Sharp practice, buying from a competitor just to leave negative will come back and bite you. So will sending goods not as described.
Eight: Don't skimp on protective packaging.
Bubble wrap and padded envelopes are relatively cheap; they do a good job on protecting your products and save you a lot of money by not replacing damaged goods and receiving tat dreaded negative feedback.
Nine: Avoid excessive postage fees.
We've all seen them, a product for one penny and £25 postage. Okay it saves paying Ebay commission, but your reign will be short. It is fee evasion and another disgruntled Ebay member will report you. Be fair, Ebay have provided a vehicle from which you can earn serious money .. don't rip them off.
Ten: Look at opening an Ebay store.
It only costs a fraction of the normal price to list items and they remain for thirty days and will be auto renewed.
